Reading Notes: Ramayana Part B

PDE Ramayana: Shurpanakha and Rama . Source. Indian Myth and Legend by Donald A. Mackenzie (1913) Shurpanakha who is the sister of Ravana, fell deeply in love with Rama. She was described really badly, she was said to be ugly, and her voice was very harsh and ‘unpleasant’ so she was someone not so appealing. Shurpanakha also seems to be very determined, when he started loving Rama she wanted to do anything to make Rama love her back. She even took a different form of looks so that Rama would leave Sita and be with Shurpanakha. She changed her look from ugly to beautiful. She even started talking bad about Sita, just to get Rama. This shows that she would go to any level to get that she wants, she doesn’t care about making up lies. This shows how good Rama is, he was always loyal to his Sita. To get Shurpanakha off his back, he suggested her to marry Lakshmana. I think Shurpanakha would be a really good character to change in a story which would change up the whole story. I would want t...

Reading Notes: Ramayana Part A

PDE Ramayana: Rama: Avatar of Vishnu . Source. Indian Myth and Legend by Donald A. Mackenzie (1913). Lord Vishnu, was very determined and helpful to anyone who came to ask for help. When Indra and other gods went to heaven to talk about how the Rakshasas were in Lanka and were making trouble, he was ready to help. Vishnu right away said ‘don’t worry, I will take care of Rakshasas that are causing trouble'. He choose to go as four parts, so he divided himself which I believe was a really good idea because he could be in 4 different places at the same time. Out of the four avatars of Vishnu, Rama was considered the most beautiful for everyone. He was pretty much the main one and one that his father was attached to the most because brahmin said that Rama had the traits of Lord Vishnu. There are many ways I could retell the story but one way I think would be really nice is if I kept the Brave Rama the same, with the same characteristics and show him in the modern life. Puttin...

Seven Ways to Crush Self-Doubt in Creative Work  - This blog is very helping and can be used in any situation. Many times you learn things that only work for school but you can use this for anything in life. I really liked what John Spencer said, I think it was spot on. I really liked the examples that were given in the blog, especially about how a baby falls many times trying to learn to walk but the baby still gets up and tries to walk again. If babies can do this then why can't we do what we desire. I try to think of how no one is born with a lot of the skills we learn in our life time, we learn as we age.  Why rejection hurts so much — and what to do about it - No one likes rejection, no matter how old you are and no matter what situation you are in, rejection hurts. This was also a very helpful blog to read because rejection happens everywhere not just in college. Many people, even I would want to give up because of course it doesn't feel good to be rejected. It was a i...

Topic Brainstorm

Image
There are so many different topics that sound very interesting to learn more in depth about but here are four. Hanuman- ‘The monkey-god’ is one of the more popular gods of them all. I am interested in this topic because I want to learn more about him and what all he is known for. I know that he is strong and he has lifted a big part of land. I want to learn about that story and I would probably want to retell it by switching some things around or making up anther story that shows all the characteristics of Hanuman. My source . Creation Stories- There are many stories that say how creation of the world happened and who the first person. Depending on who you ask, different stories will come up. This would be a good topic because you can make the creation story any way you want and even by mixing multiple stories together. I do not know about the creation story but I do want to learn. I would probably mix up little bits of multiple stories if I were to retell it. My source . Wo...

Learning Challenge: Sleep is important

Image
H.E.A.R.T Video: Web I knew that sleep was really important for more than one reason, I just was not sure what exactly the reason's were. I also knew that there was negative effect from not getting enough sleep but I did not know that it could potentially be a reason for death or even obesity. I was really surprised to hear that it effects obesity, but it does make sense. A person who is more awake is more likely to eat more. I want to know how many days a person can go without sleeping and still be alive. I will look up if anyone had researched this and has a educated guess on how many days it would be.                                                     Child peacefully sleeping : Source

Week 2 Story: Turtle Tales

Image
Turtle Tales There once was a turtle names James who always tried to show off to his friends on how he was the fastest turtle. “You can never beat me” James told his friend Max as they both were talking about the race   Max was tired of always loosing to James, day after day Max continued to lose to James no matter how much he tried.   “How are you so much faster than me?” Max asked James.   “I was just born like this, you can try to beat me but we all know you can’t” James said with a smirk   It wasn’t that James was any bigger or smaller than Max, they were the same age and they were even the same size.   Max had been practicing everyday trying to be faster than the day before.   It had been a week since they last raced, Max felt like he could beat James today. He said “ Today I will finally be faster”   James and Max raced again, this time Max feeling more prepared than he ever was. The race was the usual track, fr...

Growth Mindset: (EC) Sharing with others

Image
I chose to complete the growth mindset challenge from the list My main point I wanted to get across was we should continue to learn new things, challenge ourselves, and think 'not yet' rather than having a fixed mindset. First I asked my friend if he had heard of the Growth Mindset, he said he had not. Then I told him what it was, how 'not yet' and the way you keep your mindset can really change your life. Being in college, it is really important to not feel like you failed because college is not easy. I told my friend to have a growth mindset and think of 'not yet' rather than I can't do it. He said he was going to use the growth mindset not just in college but also in his life. He wanted to learn to do tricks on his skate board but he had fell many times trying to do the tricks so he stopped trying new ones and just sticked to what he knew. I told him how the video mentioned when we aren't trying new things are brain is not really being used, you...

Reading Notes(EC): The Golden Goose

Image
The Golden Goose   -  More Jataka Tales by Ellen C. Babbitt with illustrations by Ellsworth Young This story can really teach a lot to someone. I think it had a really good message behind the story that people can learn from. What I took away from this story is that people do want to help but greed can ruin everything. No one should be so greedy especially if someone is helping you out, because of the greed the feather turned normal which had no selling value. The mother ruined it for herself Starting: The story started in a tradition way ' Once upon a time..'. The main character was mentioned right away, which was the goose. There is not much background into but we do learn everything we need to know as the story goes on.  Story telling: This story was told in third person and the author also uses quotation marks to tell us exactly what the characters said. Ending: The story ended right after the climax of the story, there was no unn...

Reading Notes: Jatakas - Part 2

Image
Two Turtle Jatakas  - THE TURTLE AND THE KING and THE TURTLE AND THE GEESE by  Ellen C. Babbitt. This was one story I really liked. These two stories were different from one another too and I really liked how the turtle in the first story tricked the people. Beginning : I have noticed that the short stories sometimes start out with the main character/characters in the story such as the turtle in both story. The stories are short and straight to the point that is the most important. If you give a lot of other unnecessary information for short stories like this, the readers won't know what to pay attention to. End : The story telling ends right after the main point of the story is over, the writers don't drag it out unnecessarily because it is not important. Example when the turtle got to the lake and then the turtle fell to the ground and what the people said. Story being told : Writers uses quotation marks to say exactly what the character says. Keeping it simple. Som...

Reading Options

Image
There are many things that I found interesting but out of all the things I read, I found three that I would be interested in learning more about.  The Tales of Shiva: LINK From what I read in the summary, Lord Shiva did many things that made me question the purpose behind why he did what he did such as cursing Parvati. I am interested in learning some of the stories and learning why he did what he did.  Images : LINK I am also interested in learning more about the Hindu god and goddesses which we will be exploring second half of the semester. I want to learn the main things about them and what they are mostly known for.  Story: Krishna and Rukmini I want to read about Krishna and Rukmini and how they came to be and the challenges they had phased because they liked each other but couldn't be together. Growing up I always saw statues and pictures of Krishna and Radha and not with Rukmini so I want to learn how that came to be.      ...
