Learning Challenge: Being Happpy

Image
I did the learning by HEART challenge and picked the video ‘ Be Happy! ’. I think this is a very important video because it is very easy to feel sad when little things happen in life. If we focus on the better things and positive things in life and do things that make us feel good then we will be happy. I like how the video listed simple things that anyone can do to be happy like doing things you are good at or just setting goals and reaching them. Little things really make a difference. I knew that doing things that you like can make you happy but the list of simple things in the video gave me ideas on what I could do to be more happy. I didn’t think facing my fears would make me happy but it would make me feel better when I achieve something. One I really like is ‘Live in the moment’, which is hard to do sometimes for me, because I worry about the future a lot. I want to explore how much of the stuff I would actually do if I made a list. I will make an a list and see how I use this l

Feedback Strategies

There were many good articles that I found for feedback tips and strategies that seem really useful when giving someone feedback. One that I really liked and found most helpful was ‘ 7 Key Characteristics Of Better Learning Feedback ’ by Grant Wiggins, gives good examples on what exactly each of the 7 characteristics that were listed for better feedback meant. I like that he said to be specific, say exactly what to do, more or less or what would make it better. The article I liked about praising that was very interesting was ‘ A Troubling Side Effect of Praise ’ and the research done on kids was very interesting. Praising for efforts and for the correct answer caused most of the kids to cheat. This shows that it is not a good idea to praise someone, even though it may seem like a good idea. I think the best feedback strategies would be to be honest but saying helpful things on how something can be fix, give examples rather than saying, 'it could be better' or just saying 'g

I want to use Ganesha and Kartikeya, his brother, as I tell stories. I want to use these two brothers and tell some interesting stories about their childhood because to me that is the best time of our life. I think these two characters would be really fun to change up and create stories about.  One story that I would want to create is when the two brothers want the same things, one of them outsmarts the other into getting it but that never effects their relationship. Such as they both want the same food but there is only one of it. I would want to recreate the story of the race around the world but use different object rather than a mango and a different outcome. Source .  Another possible story would be Ganpathi bringing home a girl for the first time to meet his family and how nervous he is because he doesn't want to disappoint his family. The girl is three years older than Ganpathi, which is not the ideal relationship, which is the reason both of them were extremely ner

Week 3 Story: True love

Image
Link to Portfolio . PDE Ramayana: Shurpanakha and Rama . Source. Indian Myth and Legend by Donald A. Mackenzie (1913) I kept the same main characters, and kind of the main idea the same but changed it up to the modern day story and how it would happen compared to how the story was told. Once upon a time, on a normal sunday afternoon, or what seemed to be a normal day to Rama and Sita as they went on their daily walk to the park. It was not just any normal park though, it was the famous central park in New York. Rama and Sita are newly weds, they have only been married for a month now and are trying to figure out things to do in New York, since they are both new to the place. Rama is from Florida and Sita was from Texas, I bet you are wondering how that happened. They had an arranged marriage, It was almost a typical arranged marriage, their families knew each other for decades and so the family decided to introduce Rama (a very handsome man) to Sita and they started to get to

PDE Ramayana: Shurpanakha and Rama . Source. Indian Myth and Legend by Donald A. Mackenzie (1913) Shurpanakha who is the sister of Ravana, fell deeply in love with Rama. She was described really badly, she was said to be ugly, and her voice was very harsh and ‘unpleasant’ so she was someone not so appealing. Shurpanakha also seems to be very determined, when he started loving Rama she wanted to do anything to make Rama love her back. She even took a different form of looks so that Rama would leave Sita and be with Shurpanakha. She changed her look from ugly to beautiful. She even started talking bad about Sita, just to get Rama. This shows that she would go to any level to get that she wants, she doesn’t care about making up lies. This shows how good Rama is, he was always loyal to his Sita. To get Shurpanakha off his back, he suggested her to marry Lakshmana. I think Shurpanakha would be a really good character to change in a story which would change up the whole story. I would want t

PDE Ramayana: Rama: Avatar of Vishnu . Source. Indian Myth and Legend by Donald A. Mackenzie (1913). Lord Vishnu, was very determined and helpful to anyone who came to ask for help. When Indra and other gods went to heaven to talk about how the Rakshasas were in Lanka and were making trouble, he was ready to help. Vishnu right away said ‘don’t worry, I will take care of Rakshasas that are causing trouble'. He choose to go as four parts, so he divided himself which I believe was a really good idea because he could be in 4 different places at the same time. Out of the four avatars of Vishnu, Rama was considered the most beautiful for everyone. He was pretty much the main one and one that his father was attached to the most because brahmin said that Rama had the traits of Lord Vishnu. There are many ways I could retell the story but one way I think would be really nice is if I kept the Brave Rama the same, with the same characteristics and show him in the modern life. Puttin

Seven Ways to Crush Self-Doubt in Creative Work  - This blog is very helping and can be used in any situation. Many times you learn things that only work for school but you can use this for anything in life. I really liked what John Spencer said, I think it was spot on. I really liked the examples that were given in the blog, especially about how a baby falls many times trying to learn to walk but the baby still gets up and tries to walk again. If babies can do this then why can't we do what we desire. I try to think of how no one is born with a lot of the skills we learn in our life time, we learn as we age.  Why rejection hurts so much — and what to do about it - No one likes rejection, no matter how old you are and no matter what situation you are in, rejection hurts. This was also a very helpful blog to read because rejection happens everywhere not just in college. Many people, even I would want to give up because of course it doesn't feel good to be rejected. It was a in

Topic Brainstorm

Image
There are so many different topics that sound very interesting to learn more in depth about but here are four. Hanuman- ‘The monkey-god’ is one of the more popular gods of them all. I am interested in this topic because I want to learn more about him and what all he is known for. I know that he is strong and he has lifted a big part of land. I want to learn about that story and I would probably want to retell it by switching some things around or making up anther story that shows all the characteristics of Hanuman. My source . Creation Stories- There are many stories that say how creation of the world happened and who the first person. Depending on who you ask, different stories will come up. This would be a good topic because you can make the creation story any way you want and even by mixing multiple stories together. I do not know about the creation story but I do want to learn. I would probably mix up little bits of multiple stories if I were to retell it. My source . Wo

Learning Challenge: Sleep is important

Image
H.E.A.R.T Video: Web I knew that sleep was really important for more than one reason, I just was not sure what exactly the reason's were. I also knew that there was negative effect from not getting enough sleep but I did not know that it could potentially be a reason for death or even obesity. I was really surprised to hear that it effects obesity, but it does make sense. A person who is more awake is more likely to eat more. I want to know how many days a person can go without sleeping and still be alive. I will look up if anyone had researched this and has a educated guess on how many days it would be.                                                     Child peacefully sleeping : Source

Week 2 Story: Turtle Tales

Image
Turtle Tales There once was a turtle names James who always tried to show off to his friends on how he was the fastest turtle. “You can never beat me” James told his friend Max as they both were talking about the race   Max was tired of always loosing to James, day after day Max continued to lose to James no matter how much he tried.   “How are you so much faster than me?” Max asked James.   “I was just born like this, you can try to beat me but we all know you can’t” James said with a smirk   It wasn’t that James was any bigger or smaller than Max, they were the same age and they were even the same size.   Max had been practicing everyday trying to be faster than the day before.   It had been a week since they last raced, Max felt like he could beat James today. He said “ Today I will finally be faster”   James and Max raced again, this time Max feeling more prepared than he ever was. The race was the usual track, from the lake to the farm. They star

Growth Mindset: (EC) Sharing with others

Image
I chose to complete the growth mindset challenge from the list My main point I wanted to get across was we should continue to learn new things, challenge ourselves, and think 'not yet' rather than having a fixed mindset. First I asked my friend if he had heard of the Growth Mindset, he said he had not. Then I told him what it was, how 'not yet' and the way you keep your mindset can really change your life. Being in college, it is really important to not feel like you failed because college is not easy. I told my friend to have a growth mindset and think of 'not yet' rather than I can't do it. He said he was going to use the growth mindset not just in college but also in his life. He wanted to learn to do tricks on his skate board but he had fell many times trying to do the tricks so he stopped trying new ones and just sticked to what he knew. I told him how the video mentioned when we aren't trying new things are brain is not really being used, you

Reading Notes(EC): The Golden Goose

Image
The Golden Goose   -  More Jataka Tales by Ellen C. Babbitt with illustrations by Ellsworth Young This story can really teach a lot to someone. I think it had a really good message behind the story that people can learn from. What I took away from this story is that people do want to help but greed can ruin everything. No one should be so greedy especially if someone is helping you out, because of the greed the feather turned normal which had no selling value. The mother ruined it for herself Starting: The story started in a tradition way ' Once upon a time..'. The main character was mentioned right away, which was the goose. There is not much background into but we do learn everything we need to know as the story goes on.  Story telling: This story was told in third person and the author also uses quotation marks to tell us exactly what the characters said. Ending: The story ended right after the climax of the story, there was no unnecessary information added in the en

Reading Notes: Jatakas - Part 2

Image
Two Turtle Jatakas  - THE TURTLE AND THE KING and THE TURTLE AND THE GEESE by  Ellen C. Babbitt. This was one story I really liked. These two stories were different from one another too and I really liked how the turtle in the first story tricked the people. Beginning : I have noticed that the short stories sometimes start out with the main character/characters in the story such as the turtle in both story. The stories are short and straight to the point that is the most important. If you give a lot of other unnecessary information for short stories like this, the readers won't know what to pay attention to. End : The story telling ends right after the main point of the story is over, the writers don't drag it out unnecessarily because it is not important. Example when the turtle got to the lake and then the turtle fell to the ground and what the people said. Story being told : Writers uses quotation marks to say exactly what the character says. Keeping it simple. Some

Reading Options

Image
There are many things that I found interesting but out of all the things I read, I found three that I would be interested in learning more about.  The Tales of Shiva: LINK From what I read in the summary, Lord Shiva did many things that made me question the purpose behind why he did what he did such as cursing Parvati. I am interested in learning some of the stories and learning why he did what he did.  Images : LINK I am also interested in learning more about the Hindu god and goddesses which we will be exploring second half of the semester. I want to learn the main things about them and what they are mostly known for.  Story: Krishna and Rukmini I want to read about Krishna and Rukmini and how they came to be and the challenges they had phased because they liked each other but couldn't be together. Growing up I always saw statues and pictures of Krishna and Radha and not with Rukmini so I want to learn how that came to be.

My Time Strategies

Image
I am very bad at managing my time. When classes start, all the work add up and it feels like I never have any free time, there is always something I could be doing. Many times I wait till the last minute to finish my work and I always regret it in the end. Like the article 'How to Beat Procrastination' said, we do thing that are easier to do and take less times rather than the harder thing. It is a great strategy  to make our benefits feel more than our efforts. Another thing I liked was telling others you are going to do something because you are more likely going to do it. The next article I picked was 'How to build a realistic study plan that you'll actually stick to'. Many times during college when exam come up, I have done last minute studying because I keep telling myself I will do it tomorrow. Most of my time I spend finishing up work for the class and then I get tired so I don't study. My strategy is to study 30 minutes each day about the thing we learne

New Technology

Image
Technology has taken over our life. As more time goes on, technology will be even more part of our life than it already is. For this online class we only rely on technology to connect us to everyone and everything for this class. I am not familiar with many of the sites we will be using in this class such as 'Blogger' but after using it, it is very easy to get used to. I have only used google docs and the  announcements page from the list of other sites. This online environment is very different from other online classes I have taken before. For all my online class we only used canvas but for this class we are pretty much using everything else but canvas. But I do understand why we are not using canvas, because after we graduate there won't be canvas. In any future career we would use google docs or some of the other sites we learn. A site that is new to me and one I really like is 'Blogger', it is very simple and easy to use after you get the hang of it.

Class Assignments

Image
My first impression from this class was that it will be interesting and different from any other class I have yet to take. Blogging for a class is new to me, I have never written a  blog before and did not think I would for a class. I really like how the class is independent and we get to set our own times and schedule as well as pick what assignment we really want to do. I also like that there is extra credit options in this class that we can do if we do not want to a assignment for the class or even if we want to get some extra points. I am looking forward to reading other blogs and commenting on other classmates blogs, I really enjoy getting to know others. I think for me coming up with stories will be a little difficult but each week it will get easier as we practice more. I am looking forward to growing my knowledge and connecting the things I already know.                                      Excited for the extra credit. Source: Google

A Growth Mindset

Image
Growth Mindset can really change everything for a person. It can make a big difference in a person's life. You can use Growth mindset for everything in life, you can use it for school or your personal life. I really enjoyed  Carol Dweck's videos, I had not heard of her before but she is very positive and I think that is how everyone should be in order to achieve great things in life. I have not heard of the growth mindset. Something I would do this semester is share what I have learned from growth mindset with someone else because I think this does not require much effort and it can really change someones mind on how they look at things. Sharing this can really bring a positive effect on a person's life. One thing I really liked from the shorter video was how teachers say "good job, was that easy for you?' to students and how that is not good. In middle school and elementary school I have heard this many times and when I did heard it, I told my self good job but I

Introduction: A little about me

Image
Hello everyone, my major is Psychology. I want to do my masters in Speech-Language Pathology. After I finish with college, I want to be a Speech Therapist. I also want to move to Texas in the future, I know what you are thinking, boo Texas, but I will still always be a Sooner. I am currently a senior, this will be my 4th year in the University of Oklahoma. My biggest accomplishment last year was figuring out what exactly I wanted to do after I graduate and what I am passionate about which had been a constant struggle for me. This summer I took a trip to Chicago with my sister, it was great exploring a new city. I really enjoy traveling and going to different places. My goal is to visit all 50 states one day, I am almost half way there which is exciting. My favorite  T.V.  show is Friends, just like every other person out there. I enjoy all types of movies but comedy would probably be my favorite. Bollywood movies are also my favorite, they are very different from American movies. I am

Some of My Storybook Favorites

Image
There are many interesting stories I read along with a good themed page but these are three of my favorite ones. Ganesha's Blog : Whenever I first opened up the page, I thought it was very good how the description of Ganesha came up along with a picture. The whole blog is done is a very sweet and cute way. I liked the images that were selected. I think images make a big difference because if it is not appealing to the eye then we might not even want to read it. I also like how the story of Ganesha was told, it felt like a conversation as I was reading along the blog. The writing flowed very smoothly.  Ganesha: How It All Began:  I liked how the blog was simple and not a lot was going on. I knew exactly what the blog was talking about and it was easy to follow. I do think the name of the blog is good but one thing I was confused on was when I opened up the page, I didn't see the title again how I normally saw on everyone else's page. I also like the black and white

India...one of my favorite place

Image
India, one of my favorite places in the world. I was born in Mumbai, India and lived there for about eight years and then moved to Norman, Oklahoma. One of my favorite things about India is that depending on what part of India you go, there are different cultures, food, tradition and languages that are spoken. The image I have is of the Taj Mahal, one of the seven wonders of the world and something India is greatly known for. Even though I was born in India, I have yet to visit the Taj Mahal. I hope next time I go to India, I can go visit the famous wonder and check it off my bucket list. One of the seven wonders of the world, Taj Mahal. Source: Wikimedia Commons
